Heart Still Beating After All These Years

Heart Still Beating After All These YearsHot off the heels of a Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame induction and with the recent release of their 16th Studio CD Beautiful Broken, Seattle's Heart took the stage to perform in front of 20,000 fans at Dallas' Gexa Energy Pavilion. Even the rain couldn't keep the masses away tonight, as 10,000 fans surely got wet yet stayed put on the uncovered lawn to witness the classic rock legends.

Heart Still Beating After All These YearsThe Wilson sisters have aged gracefully and are still vocally superior considering that the girls have been touring for nearly 40 years. For example, Ann Wilson's vocal range and Nancy Wilson's guitar abilities shined during "Alone," and also on "Crazy On You." And during a funky rendition of James Brown's 'Get Up Offa That Thing" they seamlessly segued into Straight On." Visual moving backgrounds during the set were incredible also, with psychedelic visions of hearts, old band photos, album covers, logos, trippy colors and odd shapes appearing behind the performers. Other musical surprises tonight were new tracks, "Two" and the title cut, and the opening number "Wild Child."

The encore was a psychedelic tribute to Led Zeppelin, returning with "Immigrant Song” and finishing the night with the classic "Stairway to Heaven." I haven't seen Heart since the Texxas Jam of 1979, but I find it amazing how these sisters are in such fine form and are still vocally and musically at the top of their game.

Much has been said about the contribution the co-founders of the band Heart, Ann and Nancy Wilson have brought to women in rock and roll, but after another sterling performance Saturday Night at Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, Texas, the discussion should be about their contribution to the genre as a whole, no gender required. It was precise yet loose and full of nuance, with all the cornerstones of their illustrious career hit upon plus some expected and not surprises. One in particular got all the British blues rock fans in the audience losing their collective minds. Read Review »

Having said all that, Heart made all my dreams come true on August 23rd at the House of Blues in Dallas. Well, maybe not all my dreams, but pretty damn close. I've been listening to Heart for more of my life than not, so it would've been relatively easy to disappoint me considering all the build up. As a music reviewer, I find it is much more fun to criticize than praise, but I just can't find a reason to do that in this case. No blue balls here. Read Review »
